ECA Receives Building Permit for Civic Park

Last week, the City of Eugene issued a building permit to ECA to begin construction of Civic Park. Timing of the permit approval fit perfectly with the facility’s construction schedule. Early sitework began in the fall as Chambers Construction and Delta Sand and Gravel worked to level the site and prepare it for construction. This preparatory phase will be completed this month, allowing ECA to act on the building permit right away.

To wrap-up this early work phase, Chambers will lay new water and sewer lines for the site underneath Amazon Parkway. During this time, other infrastructure projects on Amazon will take place including demolition of the pedestrian overpass and installation of an at-grade pedestrian crossing. The new pedestrian crossing will be accessible and include flashing lights to provide safer access to and from Civic Park. Demolition of the overpass and construction of the new pedestrian crossings were included in the land-use requirements for the site by the City. A second at-grade pedestrian crossing will be installed on Willamette Street prior to the opening of Civic Park.

Due to the upgrades and infrastructure improvements, Amazon Parkway will be closed to all traffic beginning January 21. The closure will be in place 24 hours per day and could last until February 7th. All southbound traffic will turn east onto 18th Avenue and continue on to Patterson. Northbound traffic will be directed onto Willamette St. The Amazon Path will not be impacted by this closure and will be open to all pedestrian and bicycle traffic. For more information on detours and traffic maps, visit the City of Eugene’s project information page.

Following these final site preparations, the next phase of construction will include laying the foundation for the Kidsports Fieldhouse and the outdoor turf field. Chambers will then begin construction of the 40,000 square foot fieldhouse. Phase 1 of construction will take approximately 18 months and includes the turf field, fieldhouse, parking lot, and outdoor sport courts. The estimated completion date for this phase is spring 2020.
